Transferable Skills Training

Transferable skills & other training information for students in the CDT in Data Science.

CDT in Data Science students are expected to take the training courses outlined below.

Some of these courses are offered by the University's Institute for Academic Development (IAD). These courses are designed to help postgraduate students acquire and develop skills transferable to research and future employment. You should book a place for yourself on IAD courses as soon as possible because places are limited. If you are not able to book a place, please email datascience[a]inf.ed.ac.uk.

Some training sessions will be given by other providers (e.g. VoX); the CDT Administrator or IGS will be in touch with further details about these where appropriate.

 

MSc by Research

Whilst you should focus on your MSc coursework and dissertation, there are some courses that you are required to attend (see below) and some that you may be encouraged to attend by the CDT or your Supervisor.

 

PhD Year 1

  • How to do an Informatics PhD (IAD)

    • NOTE: This course is required for all PhD students in the School of Informatics.

  • Preparation for your PhD Proposal for 1st Year Review (IAD)
    • NOTE: This course is required for all PhD students in the School of Informatics.
  • Presentation Skills Training (VOX)
    • NOTE: This course is strongly recommended for CDT students.

Recommended optional courses:

  • How to be an Effective Researcher (IAD)

 

PhD Year 2*

  • Writing an Informatics Research Paper(IAD)

    • NOTE: This course is required for all PhD students in the School of Informatics.

Recommended optional courses:

  • How to Design an Effective Conference Poster (IAD)
  • Ease the Load - Feel Good About Your Busy Life (IAD)

 

PhD Year 3*

 

  • PhD Thesis Workshop - School of Informatics (IAD)
    • NOTE: This course is required for all PhD students in the School of Informatics.
  • Preparing for the Viva - School of Informatics (IAD)
    • NOTE: This course is required for all PhD students in the School of Informatics.
  • An Introduction to Public Engagement with Research (IAD)

 

*Topics in PhD Years 2 and 3 are subject to future revision.

 

You are also welcome to take optional training courses as offered by IAD or IGS or recommended by your MScR or PhD supervisor. If you do take any additional training courses, please email datascience[a]inf.ed.ac.uk with the name, date, and provider of the training session.
