Response to 2015/16 survey feedback.
I have taken note of the feedback from students in this course survey, and have the following comments in response: I am delighted the course has been a very positive experience for most students who responded to the survey, and it is very rewarding to see that I have managed to convey my passion for the subject! The course material is at times rather formal and abstract, so seeing that students felt it was delivered in an interesting way and that they found they learned something usful is very rewarding from the lecturer’s perspective. I am particularly pleased to see students where satisfied with the speed and quality of feedback received. The negative comments on the coursework mirror those of the previous year, and I am very aware that working with the software provided was a time-consuming and not very pleasant experience. The coursework for the course has now been changed completely in response to these comment (unfortunately the changes could only be made for the subsequent year when last year’s comments were received). From this year on, it will involve writing an extended essay in which students will be asked to apply the methods covered in the course to a specific application domain. Progress will be discussed weekly in tutorial sessions, so that students will obtain continuous feedback on their work.
