Support - Who does what?

An overview of Informatics admin support teams and what they do.

Informatics Teaching Organisation (ITO)

The Informatics Teaching Organisation administer and offer a first point of contact for all taught student enquiries, academic staff and teaching support staff.

Providing administration support for UG1, UG2, UG3, UG4, UG5 and Taught MSc programmes.

Based on level 6,  Appleton Tower, EH8 9LE.

Informatics Graduate School (IGS)

The Informatics Graduate School (IGS) administer and offer support for all postgraduate research courses.

Centres for Doctoral Training (CDT/DTC)

The CDT and DTC support office can be found in Room 2.44 in the Informatics Forum. Each CDT programme has a dedicated member of administrative staff who provides specialist support for students who fall within Data Science, Pervasive Parallelism, Robotics and Autonomous Systems and the DTC in Neuroinformatics.

Research support offices

The School's front-line research support administration is delivered by administrative staff in Research Support Offices, based on levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the Informatics Forum. Each of these offices provides local Institute-specific support to all research staff and PGR students, interacting with administrative colleagues based elsewhere in the School.

Human Resources

The Informatics HR Team is based in room 5.39 of the Forum, and provides a full range of administrative support for all areas of staff recruitment and employment.

Portfolio Management

Line managed by Julie Young, admin Portfolio Managers are responsible for the management of all institute research grants. 

Portfolio managers work in collaboration with their relevant Research Support Office.

Main responsibilities

  • research grant proposal preparation and costing
  • funding opportunities
  • financial management of research grant portfolios and institute budgets
  • research staff contract extensions and end of employment process
  • advertisement of research grant funded positions
  • appointment of research staff, in collaboration with Human Resources
  • commitment of studentship funds and offers, in collaboration with the Informatics Graduate School

 

Knowledge Management Team (KM)

Based in room 2.46 Informatics Forum the KM team are primarily focusing on the management of data, School websites and communication.

Computing Support

Computing support are responsible for all aspects of keeping our computer systems and networks up and running and consists of several specialised teams.

The frontline Support Office is room 2.07 of the Forum. Open Monday - Friday, 9.30am-1pm and 2-5pm, phone 504503.

Use the Computing Support Form to ask a question or report a problem to the computing or the technical staff. When you use the Computing Support Form to contact us, your message is entered into our ticketing system in which you can monitor your own tickets.

Technical Staff

The School of Informatics technical staff provide mechanical and electronic support for:

  • research projects
  • student projects
  • hardware labs
  • Informatics computing infrastructure
  • School of Informatics in general
  • other departments in the George Square area as a central workshop.

There is an electronic and mechanical workshop based in Appleton Tower, on the basement level. Should you wish to contact the Technical staff you can either;
