Welcome week

Welcome week runs from Monday 11th - Friday 15th September 2017.

The School of Informatics Welcome events are detailed in the tables below; please attend the sessions as they contain important information to get you started on your postgraduate taught (PGT) degree programme.  The University also has its own calendar of Welcome events, including campus tours and a series of events intended for International students. Matriculation and student card collection

Before you arrive, you should have completed the online registration form which is will be available via the MyEd portal in the Student Personal Details channel around 4 weeks before your programme start date. Full information is available on the Student Support website:

How to register?

If you have not already received your student card, you can collect it from the University card collection event at the Main Library, George Square during the following times:

Saturday 9th September 2017: 12:00 - 16.45

Sunday 10th September 2017:  10:00 - 15:45

Monday 11th September 2017 - Friday 15th September 2017: 09.15-16:45

Monday 18th - Friday 22nd September 2017: 09.15-16.45

 

Meeting your Personal Tutor, confirming attendance and making course choices

During Welcome Week you should arrange a one-to-one meeting with your Personal Tutor; please contact the Teaching Organisation if you have yet to have a Personal Tutor allocated.  Information on how to prepare for your one-to-one meeting and how to contact your Personal Tutor is included in the School's Personal Tutoring Statement

At the meeting, your Personal Tutor will confirm your attendance and discuss your course choices.  After meeting with your Personal Tutor you can register your course choices online.

Please note: You will not be fully matriculated as a student until you have confirmed your attendance.  You must have arrived and had your attendance confirmed by 17.00 on Friday 29th September 2017.  After this date you will be referred to the College Office and you may not be permitted to commence your studies.

MSc (Taught) welcome events

The following programme of events is relevant to incoming Informatics postgraduate taught students.

During Welcome week please ensure that you complete your registration with the University and the School of Informatics and spend some time familiarising yourself with Edinburgh and the University campus.  The University has its own calendar of induction events, including campus tours and a series of events intended for international students.

The University of Edinburgh's Student Association (EUSA) also hold events for postgraduate students during Welcome Week.

There are likely to be a couple of separate events for Design Informatics and Advanced Design Informatics students only.  Information on these events will be published soon.

If English is not your first language, we recommend that you attend one of the “Test of English at Matriculation (TEAM) for Non-UK PG Students” sessions during Welcome Week.  The test assesses your listening comprehension and your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary; no preparation is required.  Please attend the session and make use of any additional support that may be offered.  As a large part of the MSc involves written reports, especially the project-based courses, English language skills are critically important for your success.  Additional information is available at the following link:

Principal's Welcome Ceremony

The Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea, officially welcomes new students to the University.  Attendees also hear from a number of student Office Bearers, including the Students' Association and Sports Union Presidents, and Senior members of University staff.

Refreshments will be provided.

Teaching support vacancies

The School of Informatics is able to offer a wide range of part-time tutoring, demonstrating, marking and related jobs to students who are currently studying at the University of Edinburgh. Previous employees have reported that this type of work provides a valuable insight for those considering a career in academia and a useful transferable skill for those of you whose future lies elsewhere. Work on a particular course might also improve your knowledge of a subject area, or open up new research opportunities.  We hope that you will benefit from this exposure to the teaching environment.
