Welcome week information for MSc taught students.

Welcome week

Welcome week runs from Monday 10th - Friday 14th September 2018.

The School of Informatics Welcome events are detailed in the tables below; please attend the sessions as they contain important information to get you started on your postgraduate taught (PGT) degree programme.  The University also has its own calendar of Welcome events, including campus tours and a series of events intended for International students.

Matriculation and student card collection

Before you arrive, you should have completed the online registration form which is will be available via the MyEd portal in the Student Personal Details channel around 4 weeks before your programme start date. Full information is available on the Student Support website:

How to register?

If you have not already received your student card, you can collect it from the University card collection event at the Main Library, George Square during the following times:

Saturday 8th September & Sunday 9th September:  12pm - 4.45pm

Monday 10th - Friday 14th September (Welcome Week):    9.15am - 4.45pm

Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th September:   Closed

Monday 17th - Friday 21st September (Week One):    9.15am - 4.45pm

Meeting your Personal Tutor, confirming attendance and making course choices

During Welcome Week you should arrange a one-to-one meeting with your Personal Tutor; please contact the Teaching Organisation if you have yet to have a Personal Tutor allocated.  

At the meeting, your Personal Tutor will confirm your attendance and discuss your course choices.  After meeting with your Personal Tutor you can register your course choices online.

Please note: You will not be fully matriculated as a student until you have confirmed your attendance.  You must have arrived and had your attendance confirmed by 16.30 on Friday 28th September 2018. After this date you will be referred to the College Office and you may not be permitted to commence your studies.

MSc (Taught) welcome events

The following programme of events is relevant to incoming Informatics postgraduate taught students.

During Welcome week please ensure that you complete your registration with the University and the School of Informatics and spend some time familiarising yourself with Edinburgh and the University campus.  The University has its own calendar of induction events, including campus tours and a series of events intended for international students.

The University of Edinburgh's Student Association (EUSA) also hold events for postgraduate students during Welcome Week.

There are likely to be a couple of separate events for Design Informatics and Advanced Design Informatics students only.  Information on these events can be found here.

If English is not your first language, we recommend that you attend one of the “Test of English at Matriculation (TEAM) for Non-UK PG Students” sessions during Welcome Week.  The test assesses your listening comprehension and your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary; no preparation is required.  Please attend the session and make use of any additional support that may be offered.  As a large part of the MSc involves written reports, especially the project-based courses, English language skills are critically important for your success.  Additional information is available at the following link:

Welcome to Design Informatics

This is a welcome and overview for all new Design Informatics Masters Students. You will hear about the structure of the course, the facilities available and lots of important information about what happens over the next year.

Principal's Welcome Ceremony

The Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Mathieson, welcomes new students to the annual ‘Principal’s Welcome Ceremony’ to mark the start of a new academic year.

You will get the opportunity to witness the traditional academic procession through the magnificent McEwan Hall, be officially welcomed by senior members of University staff and hear from the current Presidents of the Students’ Association and Sports Union. The University of Edinburgh invites all new PhD and Masters by Research postgraduate students to your official welcome event! This exclusive event covers everything that you need to know to prepare you for your career as a research student.

This event opens with a formal welcome talk, includes presentations and insights from alumni students from various research areas, talks by experts in academic transitions and information on how to maintain your positive wellbeing and the support in place to help.

Postgraduate Social Evening! (postgraduate students only)

The University of Edinburgh and Students’ Association invite all postgraduate students (PGT and PGR) to the famous Playfair Library in Old College for an entertaining evening of socialising with new fellow students, meeting current postgraduate students and networking with alumni from various postgraduate programmes. Refreshments will be provided.
