Title: Psychological well-being between robots and humans

Abstract: In Japan, "Anzen" and "Anshin" are the most fundamental terms to realize high quality of life for citizens and these two concepts are often used as safety standards for any products and services such as food, traffic systems, medical care, insurance, and also for service robots. Anzen is psychical safety and means the possibility not to harm humans. In case of robots, it is easy to evaluate Anzen because it is able to be tested by experiments objectively through an investigation about  the risk to harm humans during interactions. Anshin is psychological matter that people feel comfort or distress during the interactions with robots and relatively difficult to quantify because Anshin is a subjective issue. But it is very important to consider both Anzen and Anshin because people won't use robots if Anshin is missing in robots even though the robots have high level of Anzen. In this sense, Anshin is a concept of psychological well-being between robots and humans. In this talk I report the psychological researches investigating Anshin in Japan and some results regarding cross-cultural studies.
