Talk Title: Parametrising Motion with Vision and Natural Language attributes

Talk abstract:  End-users of robots wish to specify tasks using a combination of familiar modalities including natural language and visual demonstration. However, when this combination of modalities is used to constrain robot motion, the interpretation of the instructions must resolve significant ambiguities associated with the grounding of symbols into the scene of interest. When we consider the problem of using natural language to specify task-related cost functions for robots; current approaches are limited in their ability to deal with the ambiguity and uncertainty involved in grounding these instructions into the world. This work specifically tackles the ambiguity inherent to nuanced contextual instructions involving prepositional phrases. We use a combination of vision and natural language information to ground instructions such as "Thread along the seam" and "Sand along the grain" into actionable knowledge.

Talk Title: Wide view zone Light Field display system

Talk abstract: We propose a method to enhance the viewing angle of light field displays by making use of light refraction. Although light field displays provide 3D parallax without wearing any glasses, the viewing angle where the effect can be produced by existing systems is rather limited. Using a micro-hole light field display system as a test-bed prototype, we show that we can increase the viewing angle to nearly 180 degrees while preventing ghosting effects that previous systems suffer from, by simply inserting a transparent panel with high refraction rate between the micro-hole barrier and the LCD monitor. We also present formulas to efficiently render the light field while taking into account light refraction. We then present about the requirements to accomplish smooth motion parallax and focus cues in a light field display system. Our idea is general and is applicable to other light field display systems such as micro-lens systems.
