Title: Complexity in healthcare
Abstract:
Complexity science is the interdisciplinary subject that studies complex systems, ie those systems which are characterised by their non-trivial properties, which emerge from the much simpler interaction of their many components. Complex systems are studied by using a range of approaches from different disciplines, and two of the most prominent ones are network science and agent-based modelling, whose sustained development in the last two decades led to applications in a number of topics including social sciences, physics, engineering, and biology. However, besides epidemiology, little has been done in the field to address problems in healthcare. In this talk, I will give an overview of the Complexity research landscape in healthcare and present some of our recent results in this field. Furthermore, I will discuss the need for more research in this area, and talk about how Complexity can provide new, unique insights that complement more established approaches (including AI).
