Scholarship award information (Pre 31 Mar 2014)

Scholarship information for applicants with offers made before 31 March 2014.

Additional information for all applicants

Applicants in receipt of a postgraduate research EUCLID offer are given one month to respond to the offer via the ‘Respond to Offer’ link of their MyEd portal.  This page provides additional advice about studentships, the award of studentships, payment of fees, matriculation etc. Where an applicant has been selected for a postgraduate scholarship award, this information will be included as part of the EUCLID offer.

Applicants are asked to read the following terms and conditions before using MyEd to confirm acceptance of both their study place, and scholarship award.

It is important to note that all new students are required to provide original documentation at the point of matriculation, please ensure you bring this paperwork with you when you arrive in Edinburgh.

How to register as a student

Please contact the Informatics Graduate School if you wish to clarify any funding information prior to accepting your EUCLID offer.

Additional information for self-funded applicants

  • Self funded offers are made to applicants who are either planning to personally fund themselves throughout their programme or to applicants who are in receipt of an external scholarship (paid directly to them rather than through the University).
  • Allocation of scholarship places within the School is ongoing, therefore a revised offer which includes a funding contribution may be made to replace self-funded offers at a later date.
  • Tuition fees are subject to annual revision and are typically increased by approximately 5% per annum.  Acceptance of a self-funded offer is a commitment that tuition fees will be paid, irrespective of any future fee increases or adjustments.
  • Upon matriculation, the University will directly contact you to arrange payment of these fees. If you have secured a scholarship or sponsorship for your studies you should satisfy yourself that the sums awarded will be sufficient to cover these costs. Further funding information is available at: Informatics postgraduate fees
  • If you go beyond the 3 years of your PhD, you will receive (and will be required to personally pay) the fees for each semester in which you are registered beyond the end date of your programme (which includes a matriculation fee for the "write-up year" and continuation fees if you go beyond four years). Information related to these additional fees is available under "Other fees and charges" on our 'payment of fees' page.

Additional information for applicants in receipt of a funded offer

  • Informatics Student Services report on scholarship awards from a number of internal and external sources. Where possible, full information about the funding source will be provided in the EUCLID offer letter.
  • All funded applicants should carefully note the funding period of the award, normally 3 or 3.5 years for a full-time PhD student.  The scholarship award will commit to a fixed period of funding, although may be shorter than the length of the programme of study.
  • Tuition fees are subject to annual revision and are typically increased by approximately 5% per annum.  An offer to cover tuition fees is a commitment that fees will be covered, irrespective of any future fee increases or adjustments.
  • Upon matriculation, applicants should ensure they provide the University's Fees Departments with a copy of their offer letter to ensure the University will contact the School of Informatics to arrange payment of fees. If you have secured a scholarship or sponsorship for your studies you should satisfy yourself that the sums awarded will be sufficient to cover these costs. Further funding information is available at: Informatics postgraduate fees
  • Students funded by the EPSRC and UKRI Centres for Doctoral Training should note the funding period of the award. For those on the 1+3 programmes, progression from the MScR to PhD will be approved by the CDT Executive Committees.
  • Funding packages are unable to pay for matriculation or continuation fees charged by the University after the 3 year PhD programme (even if stipends cover 3.5 years). If you go beyond the 3 years of your PhD, you will receive (and will be required to personally pay) the fees for each semester in which you are registered beyond the end date of your programme (which includes a matriculation fee for the "write-up year" and continuation fees if you go beyond four years). Information related to these additional fees is available here under "Other fees and charges" on our 'payment of fees' page.
  • Identified scholarships funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) may be enhanced by an additional award, up to £1,200 per annum. Graduate School will confirm the exact amount of this enhancement, if appropriate, once final student intake numbers are known, per session.
  • Scholarship funded students are required to immediately inform the School in the event of any withdrawal from their studies, irrespective of whether this withdrawal is of a permanent or temporary nature. In such an event the School reserves the right to suspend or terminate scholarship payments. See our page on withdrawal from PGR Study page.
  • Scholarship funded students are required to matriculate with the University on or shortly after the start date prescribed in the EUCLID offer letter. Any proposed change of start date should be discussed with the Informatics Graduate School, resulting in the creation of a revised EUCLID offer letter.  See matriculation advice in our arrival and induction page.
  • The University reserves the right to either transfer or discontinue the study of scholarship funded students who fail to make satisfactory study progress. In either event the funding award will be either terminated or reduced in duration.
  • International students in receipt of a scholarship are reminded that the UK Border Agency (UKBA) requires the University to report on any unauthorised absence of Tier 4 visa students, in order to maintain our UKBA Highly Trusted Sponsor status.  Failure to respond to any attendance monitoring notification may result in the suspension or termination of scholarship payments.  See our attendance monitoring advice page.
  • In general, scholarship income is exempt from UK income taxes, subject to standard income limits, individual circumstances or additional income. Students in receipt of a scholarship award are encouraged to consult HM Revenue & Customs for additional information.
  • The Graduate School arrange all scholarship payments, but can only do this once the student has successfully matriculated.  Once matriculated, students should visit the Graduate School to complete the payment paperwork, ensuring that the first scholarship payment is paid directly into a nominated bank account within 7 days of matriculation. The first payment will normally cover the first three months of stipend, subsequent payments will be paid monthly into the same bank account. Further information will be available from the Graduate School upon completion of matriculation.
  • Where a scholarship award has been made up of non-School funding sources, the external sponsor may, from time to time, require details from the University as to the current student status and study progress. The Graduate School assumes that all scholarship funded students give prior permission for the School to provide such information where necessary. Note that this agreement does not affect your statutory rights under the UK Government Data Protection Legislation.
  • Scholarship funded students may be asked to provide a paper version of their EUCLID offer letter at matriculation.
