Advice for research students wishing to attend taught courses.
Taught course registration process for research students
MSc by Research (not CDT students in their MSc by Research year), MPhil or PhD students who wish to register for undergraduate or MSc taught courses must follow the School procedure and University regulations as follows:
The student should consider what Study Mode they wish to take the course as:
(a) “Class-only” - This permits the student to attend lectures but not any additional activities, e.g. labs, tutorials, demonstrations. The student does not sit assessment and does not receive credit for the course. This Study Mode requires permission from the Principal Supervisor and course lecturer only. Class-Only is sometimes called "Auditing".
(b) “Classes & assessment excluding centrally arranged exam” - This permits the student to attend lectures and additional activities (e.g. labs, tutorials, etc.). The student can also undertake coursework assessment (no centrally-arranged exam) which may include essays, tutorial participation, oral presentations, practical, lab work etc. This Study Mode requires permission from the Principal Supervisor, course lecturer and the College Office; or,
(c) “Classes & assessment including centrally arranged exam” - This permits the student to attend lectures and additional activities (e.g. labs, tutorials, etc.).The student also takes all assessment including coursework and centrally arranged exams. This Study Mode requires permission from the Principal Supervisor, course lecturer and the College Office.
Postgraduate Research (PGR) students are permitted to take taught courses as ‘Class-Only’ (Study Mode (a) listed above) without requiring College Office approval.
- In exceptional circumstances, a student may request to take a taught course as “Classes & Assessment…” (Study Modes (b) and (c) listed above). The University Postgraduate Degree Programme Regulations (Regulation 18) state: “Exceptionally, with College approval, students may take up to 20 credits of additional study at Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF, http://www.scqf.org.uk/) levels 7-11 during each year of study”. Therefore, College Approval must be acquired as the student will be seeking additional credits to their degree programme.
- Once the student knows what course(s) and Study Mode they wish to be registered on the course as, they must request written permission (by email) from their Principal Supervisor, stating the course(s) and study mode(s).
- The supervisor will consider the request based on the student’s workload and overall load (credit and non-credit bearing) on the student in the year.
- Please note, PGR students do not receive an academic achievement transcript at the end of their degree; so participation and completion of taught courses will not be officially documented in an achievement report issued by the University.
- Once the student has written permission from their Supervisor, they must request written permission (by email) from the course lecturer; stating the course and study mode and include the Supervisor’s permission email.
- Once the lecturer has approved the request, the student must email firstname.lastname@example.org to request that they are formally registered on the course(s). The permission emails from the Supervisor and course lecturer must be included. If the study mode includes assessment, then the email from the supervisor must include a convincing case that assessment is necessary.
- If the correct information has been provided, the student will be formally registered for the course by the Informatics Teaching Organisation (ITO) staff. The course registration will appear in the student’s MyEd Portal.
- If College Office approval is required (for Study Modes (b) and (c) above), then the Supervisor must submit the case that will go to College to IGS. This must be countersigned by the Deputy Head of Graduate School before being forwarded to College Office.
CDT NLP Students:
Once approved by their Supervisor, CDT NLP students should email their course selections to their CDT Administrator at least a week before the deadline for course selections, for uploading onto Euclid to facilitate registration.
Postgraduate research students from schools other than Informatics should contact their Programme Director or appropriate postgraduate secretary to arrange course registration. Informatics staff cannot edit EUCLID records for students registered on a non-Informatics programme.
