Using Robotics Laboratories and Equipment

Instructions for requesting lab access, lab rules, and links to health and safety

The robotics laboratories are a world class facility offering cutting-edge robotics equipment, sensorised spaces to run experiments, and support. We strive to make the space available for all research staff and students. However, due to the nature of the equipment and the related risks, the lab access is strictly restricted to authorised lab users only. This page describes the process to request access to the robotics labs and provides relevant materials that each lab user must familiarise themselves with.

IPAB operates across multiple labs located across two buildings:

  • Informatics Forum, 10 Crichton Street, EH8 9AB, Edinburgh
    • G.13 Computer Graphics Lab (capacity 6)
    • G.17 Aerial Robotics Lab (capacity 10)
    • 1.30 Manipulation Lab (capacity 6)
  • Bayes Centre, 47 Potterrow, EH8 9BT, Edinburgh
    • G.6 Gait Lab (capacity 6)
    • G.7 Field Robotics Lab (capacity 20)
    • G.20 Robotics Teaching Lab (capacity 10)
    • 1.25 Living Lab (capacity 20)
    • 1.42 VR Lab (capacity 10)

Before you you can start using the facilities you must:

  1. Complete building inducitons
  2. Request lab access
  3. Read and sign health and safety risk assessments
  4. Receive training and induction for requested spaces and equipment

Each of these steps is detailed below. There instructions and rules may change in the future. Please refer back to this page if you are unsure about the current rules and procedures.

Lab rules

  1. Working hours are: 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday.
  2. Out of hours working is allowed 8am to 9am and 6pm to 10pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 5pm on Saturday.
  3. You must not use the robotics laboratories outside of the hours stated above.
  4. Informatics Forum is open from 06:30 to 22:00 weekdays and Saturday (no Sunday access).
  5. Bayes Centre is open from 07:30 to 22:00 weekdays and Saturday (no Sunday access).
  6. In the event that front doors at the Bayes Centre are closed, then access will be via the Informatics Forum.
  7. There is no overnight access allowed at any point in any building.
  8. Lone working is not allowed out of hours. If you are using the labs during these hours, you must notify the security.
  9. You must use the PowerApps Informatics entry/exit app to record when you enter a lab. The QR codes are located in the buildings and in each lab. If you moving to another work location, such as an office or another lab, you must log out of your previous location and log into the new one. Always provide the correct room number when using the app and working in the robotics labs.
  10. If you are required to self-isolate or if you have tested positive for COVID-19, please report this via the form in the link below and inform your line manager.
  11. Face coverings must be worn at all times.
  12. The number of occupants in each lab must not exceed the maximum capacity stated above. It is everyone's responsibility to ensure that the lab does not get overcrowded.
  13. Equipment use must be logged where logbooks are provided.
