I started to seriously consider the idea of pursuing a PhD in my final year of undergraduate studies. I enjoyed the experience of doing a research project in my final year and continuing my studies with a PhD felt the natural thing to do. My studies are in the research area of spectral graph theory which, in a nutshell, represents the study of the algebraic properties of matrices related to graphs.

The PhD is certainly the biggest challenge that I have taken so far. However, it proved to be a very rewarding experience just as well. I improved skills such as critical thinking and problem solving in ways I did not expect. I am able to investigate interesting problems that have not been solved yet which is a great experience on its own. Sometimes I tell my friends that the PhD is working on a problem sheet without solutions.

Overall, I am very satisfied with my decision to do a PhD and I strongly encourage everyone with a keen interest in a certain topic and motivation for solving problems to consider the option of pursuing a PhD.

Why LFCS?

Throughout my undergraduate studies, I was always interested in the more theoretically inclined courses of Computer Science. Hence it was pretty clear that LFCS would be the right fit for me. It is always intellectually stimulating to work in an environment surrounded by world leading experts and LFCS provides this fantastic opportunity indeed. Finally, the LFCS seminar series gives an excellent chance to learn about problems in different research areas and meet speakers from different universities.

Advice for PhD applicants

Academically speaking, your relationship with your supervisor is one of the most important in the coming years. Maintaining this relationship vivid is one of the secrets for a great PhD experience.

Sharing your impressions with other PhD students can help you a lot throughout your studies. It is likely you encounter similar challenges and obstacles and dealing with them together is much easier than on your own. Personally, I always have something to learn when speaking with other PhD students that started earlier than me.
