Mixed Martial Arts, the new Sweet Science

Abstract

Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) has a strong association with brutal pugilism and primitive gladiatorial combat, but this modern combat sport is far more technical and strategic than one might expect. More than just two combatants beating each other bloody in a cage, MMA requires both physical ability as well as mental agility. I would like to explore the history of the sport from its ancient roots to its growth in the 20th century then cover broadly the many martial arts disciplines used in the sport as well as the strategies used in the ring.
