Title:                     Identifying multimorbidity patterns through network and clustering analysis

Abstract:

Multimorbidity, defined as the presence of multiple chronic diseases in the individual and the population, is a relevant public health problem. We know it alters the quality of life and the functioning of health systems. An essential step to study multimorbidity is to know the multimorbidity patterns, that is the non-random association between diseases. In this context, network science is a powerful tool to analyze and visualize associations of diseases. It can apply clustering techniques that allow to identify patterns of diseases and profiles of patients that can be helpful to understand the underlying physio-pathological mechanisms and develop specific preventive actions. In this talk, I will present some of my work on this topic. I will focus on how to build networks of patients from a cross-sectional perspective combining a clinical-statistical approach and studying the impact of different profiles on COVID-19 severity. However, individuals and their diseases are not static but evolve. Understanding how this evolution occurs is essential to take individual and collective preventive actions, detecting points of irreversibility and trajectories associated with adverse health outcomes when we still have room to act. In the second part of the talk, I will present some of our work on the study of evolution of multimorbidity applying dynamic Bayesian networks.
