Resitting examinations or coursework

Students who have failed a pre-honours (1st or 2nd year) course due to a missed or failed exam are permitted to resit the exam a limited number of times. The following guidelines apply to resit exams:

Each pre-honours course normally has two exam sittings per year: one in December or May, and one in August.

  • Once you have passed a course, you may not resit the exam to achieve a higher mark.
  • There is a re-examination fee.You will be invoiced by Student Administration.
  • It is your responsibility to check the resit timetable on the Student Administration website, find the time and location of the resit exam and ensure you are present for that resit. No formal registration is necessary and students will not be individually notified of the resit date and location.
  • Resit attempts cannot be delayed. If you do not attend the resit for any reason that does not count as Special Circumstances this will still count as an ‘attempt’.
  • If after the August resit diet you have not achieved the progression requirements to 3rd year Honours (see below), you may not be permitted to continue at the University and you should contact your Personal Tutor as a matter of urgency.
  • If you are permitted to continue at the University with missing credits (either from first year going into second year, or in rarer cases from second year going into third year), you may resit an exam again in the following year. For any course, you are permitted a maximum of four attempts at the exam (the initial sitting and up to three resits; but see below regarding special circumstances). There are two different modes for resits in the following year: One is that you retake the course completely ("Class and Exam") and are expected to attend fully and submit all work. The other is "Exam Only". Your Personal Tutor will discuss with you which mode should be requested for you.
  • In some cases, students miss or fail an exam due to special circumstances such as acute illness during the exam, death of a close family member, or other reasons outwith the student's control. If you are affected by such circumstances, you *must* speak to your personal tutor as soon as possible and file a special circumstances form. Depending on the circumstance, you may be awarded a "null sit" for an examination, which means no mark will be recorded and that sitting will not count towards the total number of exam attempts. In particular, students who have been awarded null sits for examinations in December or May may sit the August resit examination as a first attempt.

Students may fail a course even though they passed the exam, due to failed or non-submitted coursework. If this applies to you, you may be required to do the coursework in the following year. In this case, you can be registered for "Assessment" (no attendance) or "Classes & Assessment (excl. centrally arranged exam)". Depending on the coursework requirements, it also may be possible for you to pass the course by resitting the exam and achieving a higher mark.
