Use of semester time and coursework deadlines

Calendar of course work deadlines and staff guidance for setting coursework submission deadlines for different cohorts and semesters.

Calendar of course work deadlines

ITO maintain the following calendar based on information received from the course lecturer, it is the academics' responsibility to ensure these dates are accurate as ITO do not set course work deadlines!

Guidance for the use of Semester time

The arrangements differ between UG and PGT teaching:

UG teaching (3rd and 4th year)

  • Most of the courses which have 3, 4 or 5 for "normal year taken" will have the main examination in April/May.   A handful of semester 1 courses have their main examination in December and this is specified in the DRPS.  For Semester 1 courses with an April/May exam, there will be a December sitting for visiting students who are here only for semester 1.
  • Standard 10 point courses with an examination+practical structure shall be completed in the first ten weeks of semester.  Ideally all lectures covering new material will take place in weeks 1-9 leaving week 10 for revision and the completion of practical work.

Deadlines for the practical work for these courses should be set within the window 10-4pm on some working day (Mon-Fri) of semester. For courses with "normal year taken" = 3 or 4, coursework deadlines should be set no later than:

  • semester 1 courses: 16:00 on Friday of week 10
  • semester 2 courses: 16:00 on Friday of week 9

Courses which have "normal year taken" = 3 or 4, but which are examined by extended essay or entirely based on practical work (ie, no exam) shall have deadlines no later than:

  • Semester 1 courses: 16:00 on Thursday of week 2 of semester 2
  • Semester 2 courses: 16:00 on Monday of Revision week of semester 2
  • Innovative Learning Week (ILW) occurs between weeks 5 and 6 of Semester 2, no deadlines should be set during ILW or immediately afterwards (such as Monday or Tuesday of week 6) to allow students to participate in ILW activities.
  • The ug4 and MInf project deadline is 4pm on Thursday of week 11 of semester 2.
  • The three weeks at the end of semester 1 and one week at the end of semester 2 are available to students to work on practical courses (eg System design, in the case of ug3 students) or their ug4 project.

PG teaching ("normal year taken"=5 courses)

"normal year taken" = 5 courses (a subset of the level 11s) may examine in the examination diet at the end of Semester 1.

Courses examined by extended essay, or entirely based on practical work (ie no exam), shall have deadlines no later than:

  • Semester 1 courses: 16:00 on Thursday of week 2 of semester 2
  • Semester 2 courses: 16:00 on Monday of Revision week of semester 2
  • Deadlines for the practical work for these courses should be set within the window 10-4pm on some working day (Mon-Fri) of semester.
  • Courses with examinations at the end of semester shall complete all teaching and practical work by the end of week 10.  This is in order to leave a clear week for revision prior to the examination diet.
  • semester 1 courses with no examination in the December diet shall have all teaching and practical work complete by the end of week 12 of semester 1.
  • semester 2 courses shall have all teaching and practical work complete by the end of week 10 of semester 2.
  • Innovative Learning Week (ILW) occurs between weeks 5 and 6 of Semester 2, no deadlines should be set during ILW or immediately afterwards (such as Monday or Tuesday of week 6) to allow students to participate in ILW activities.
