South China University of Technology—University of Edinburgh Dual-Degree (2+2, 2+3, 3+2) Programmes

Overview of Edinburgh School of Informatics Dual-Degree Programmes with South China University of Technology

Information for students starting in 2018

Introduction to the programmes

The University of Edinburgh School of Informatics and the South China University of Technology Faculty of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering have agreed a shared degree programme. Selected SCUT students who have completed the first two or three years of their degree programme can apply to come to the University of Edinburgh for further study. On successful completion of the programme they will receive degrees from both SCUT and Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh programme

Students on the programme have three options:

  1. 2+2: Two years of study at SCUT, then the normal 3rd and 4th years of a BSc or BEng programme in the School of Informatics;
  2. 2+3: Two years of study at SCUT, then the normal 3rd, 4th and 5th years of the Master of Informatics (MInf) programme;
  3. 3+2: Three years of study at SCUT, then the normal 4th and 5th years of the Master of Informatics (MInf) programme.

These programmes are all made up of taught courses and, in the final year(s), a substantial project. The possible projects for 2018 will be released in Spring 2018.

Programme application process and entry requirements

Early in 2018 the SCUT International Office will circulate an invitation to apply. Edinburgh require the equivalent of a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (US 4-point scale) and a good working knowledge of English (see below).

An Edinburgh representative will visit SCUT in late March 2018 for interviews—applicants will be asked to submit a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and a transcript of their first 2 1/2 years of study in advance.

Successful applicants will be notified within a week.

English language requirement

Successful applicants must either already have taken, or arrange to take as quickly as possible, either the IELTS Academic module, with an overall score of at least 6.5, and at least 5.5 in each component; or the TOEFL IBT, with an overall score of 92 or above and at least 20 in each section.

University of Edinburgh application

Successful applicants must then formally apply to the University of Edinburgh for direct entry into 3rd year, which will be automatically approved once the necessary English language qualification is reported.

Early arrival for presession

All new participants in the programme must arrive in the summer of 2018 and undertake a presession programme including both advanced English language study and preparation for being a student at Edinburgh, as well as social and cultural activities.

Scholarship

All participants in the programme receive an annual scholarship of £3000. In the first year this covers the cost of the presession. In the subsequent year(s) it is given directly to the student.

The SCUT degree

All students are required to complete the course requirements of their chosen track from SCUT. After completion of their degree in Edinburgh, students are required to return to China, where they will receive their SCUT degree.
