MSc by Research stage
Information about the 1st year of the programme.
In Year 1 of the CDT programme you will be registered for the degree of MSc by Research in Biomedical AI. You will complete 180 credits: 120 credits for compulsory courses and 60 for elective courses.

Compulsory Courses
CDT students are required to take the following core courses during their MSc year:
Issues in Clinical Data Modelling (10 credits, Semester 1)
In this course you will learn about the challenges of clinical data modelling through guest lectures by clinicians and a shadowing visit to a clinic.
Foundations in Responsible Research and Innovation (10 credits, Semester 1)
In this course you will explore the concept of responsible research and innovation and how this may bear upon the roles of scientists and engineers in new and emerging science and technology (NEST) projects.
Group Research Project (20 credits, Semester 2)
In a group research project where you will work in groups of 2-3 on an application of Artificial Intelligence to a biomedical problem.
Individual Research Project (80 credits, Semester 2)
In an individual research project you will work independently on an application of Artificial Intelligence to a biomedical problem.
Elective Courses
The core courses are supplemented by several elective courses (60 credits in total), which you should select with the approval of the CDT Personal Tutor.
Course Registration
You must complete your course selection as soon as possible before the end of Week 2. Course registration process is outlined in the MSc Handbook.

As soon as you have made your selection, please e-mail the CDT Coordinator who will enrol you on the courses. Also be sure to notify the CDT coordinator and/or personal tutor of any changes you have made, to ensure your record reflects these changes by the deadline given below.

2023/24 Course Registration Deadlines
The deadlines for course registration this academic year are:
- Semester 1: 29 September 2023
- Semester 2: 26 January 2024
You must select courses for both semesters at this time. You can alter your selection up to the deadline for each semester.
Auditing a Course
To register for a course you are interested in auditing for no credit (i.e. attend lectures only, without attending associated labs, tutorials, demonstrations or submitting assessed coursework) you will need to:
- Request written permission (by e-mail) from the course organiser.
- Once you have received the approval, forward it to the CDT Coordinator. Include the course name and code, and ask to be formally registered as "Class Only."
