Title: Improvements to walking speed predictions through GPS data analysis
Abstract:
Previous work has explored using GPS data to model walking speeds for hiking and hillwalking. Here, we will validate that work using a dataset of ~100,000 km of GPS data. We will then look to extend the model to include differences between off-path and on-path travel, and discuss the importance of this in a route-planning environment. Following this, we will investigate methods which can be used to further classify off-path terrain-type, and explore the effects of doing so. Finally, we will look at the ways in which all of these factors can be brought together in order to generate a comprehensive formula for determining hiking speeds.
