Leveraging machine learning to unlock verbal thought from the brain: current challenges and opportunities

Abstract: The brain represents a new frontier for AI. Although neural data are less ubiquitous than in other domains such as computer vision, or speech and language technology, this is changing. Orders of magnitude more high-quality open machine learning datasets are on the way, to be released in the coming years in an effort to advance the state-of-the-art in brain-computer interfaces. One aim is to restore communication and mobility to profoundly paralysed individuals. In this talk, I will present on recent work in the field, flagging challenges and opportunities for ambitious AI students and researchers.
