Implicit and explicit learning in autism spectrum disorders
Abstract: Bayesian and predictive coding theories of autism hypothesise that the condition involves atypical perceptual inference, with reduced influence of prior beliefs relative to sensory evidence. Our research has shown that this effect depends on whether the prior beliefs are long-term or recently formed, hinting at an impairment in prior acquisition. Additionally, experimental regularities that are explicitly stated appear learnable for both autistic and neurotypical individuals; the differences between the groups emerge almost exclusively in implicit learning. I will present preliminary results from an experiment designed to investigate how regularity explicitness impacts learning across the autism spectrum.
