Title - New insights into insect vision
Abstract - The structure of the insect eye, composed of multiple ommatidia, is generally believed to limit them to low resolution vision, and limited potential for stereopsis. However several specialised properties of the eye suggest new ways that technology could exploit visual information available from the environment. I will describe two ongoing projects in the insect robotics group concerning insect vision. In the first, we have built a prototype sensor for determining orientation using polarised light. In the second, we started to investigate how light-activated micro-movements of the visual receptors could contribute to higher resolution and extraction of depth information.
