Title:
Insect-Inspired Depth Perception: Exploiting Micro-saccades for Dynamic Sensing
Abstract:
Depth sensing technologies encounter challenges, including computational demands and sensitivity to dynamic environments. Drawing inspiration from insect vision, particularly fruit flies, we explore an innovative approach to depth perception. While the anatomical structure of the insect eye was once thought to create a pixelated, low-resolution image, recent drosophila research reveals that light-activated micro-saccades enable super-resolution in Drosophila. We aim to leverage this principle of individual pixel movement for efficient depth sensing in various robotic applications.
In this presentation, I will discuss how photoreceptor motion is employed to capture finely detailed spatial information and present preliminary results from a simplified photoreceptor model.
