Title: Teaching and Learing about Abstraction

Abstract:

In October I gave a keynote at the Educators' Symposium at MODELS with this title. I'll try to resist the temptation to give the whole 1-hour talk at lab lunch (if you want it, you can find a version on my youtube, https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNFclWaZfiVLGqW2mXz1VUnimocMOfgpw). However, some of what I found in the research literature while planning this talk surprised me a little (not a lot, because I'm cynical like that). I'll share with you how, it turns out, much of what's commonly assumed on this subject is false, or at best, not proven.
