The Data Science Unit organized and conducted the DS4SD workshop on March 6, 2023.

Data Science Unit held the Data Science 4 Sustainable Development (DS4SD) Workshop on Monday, 6 March 2023. The workshop was organized with the aim of bringing together like-minded researchers from a range of disciplines from across the university using Data Science in pursuit United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a collection of 17 interconnected objectives designed to be a “shared blueprint for peace and prosperity and the planet, now and into the future”.

The day consisted of a mixture of short (10 minute) and lightning (5 minute) presentations, with researchers and students from around the university presenting their work supporting the different SDGs. Work covering 11 of the 17 SDGs was presented, with opportunities provided for teams to find collaborators and brainstorming future work. Representatives from various units within the University such as the Edinburgh Earth Initiative, Data for Children Collaborative, Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems and Data Education in Schools project among others presented their work.

This workshop was part of a broader agenda of events, planned around the central theme of Data Science in the service of the University’s strategy. The workshop series also aimed to fulfil the Data Science Unit’s commitment to raise Data Science awareness and foster collaborations addressing pressing societal challenges.
