The Future of Work: Gen AI for Next Generation of Robots (WRC Beijing2024): Keynote and Exhibition
Professor Sethu Vijayakumar represented The Alan Turing Institute, UK in delivering an invited keynote at the prestigious World Robotics Conference (WRC 2024) in Beijing from August 21-25, 2024. He spoke on the forum main stage on August 24, 2024, addressing the grand challenges of real world deployment of AI and Robotics technology and leveraging latest advancements in Generative AI for much more versatile and adaptive systems that can work in Shared Autonomy mode with humans in the loop. He was joined on the forum with a stellar line-up that included the leading voices in robotics from around the world like Dr Marc Raibert (Boston Dynamics), Prof Wolfram Burgard (Germany), Prof Seth Hutchinson (USA), Prof Shigeki Sugano (Japan) and Prof Marco Hutter (Switzerland). It was impressive to tour around the extensive exhibition space with the floor dominated by several established companies and startups focusing on humanoid robotics -- with live interactive demos.
Visit to BIGAI and Xiaomi Robotics, Beijing
Professor Vijayakumar was also hosted for two visits and research discussions -- one in the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence (BIGAI), situated close to Peking and Tsinghua Universities, where they work on the latest in embodied Artificial Intelligence with international collaborations; and another visit to the robotics division of the Xiaomi group on the outskirts of Beijing. The latter company is famous for their release of the CyberDog and Cyber One Humanoids. This opened up avenues for many future potential collaborations in this space.
Talk at Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen
Two of the former students of the SLMC lab, Professor Lei Yan and Dr Yiming Yang hosted Professor Vijayakumar in Shenzhen, where he delivered a Distinguished Lecture at the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), Shenzhen. He also got a chance to interact with faculty over lunch and then, visited the Moying Robotics startup, a company focusing on loco-manipulation solutions in the industrial supply chain market.
